Are PLA Straws Just Like Plastic?

As plastics straws are on the way out their alternative, PLA has become their acceptable replacement.  PLA stands for Polylactic Acid which is often mistaken for "biodegradable".  PLA is made from renewable resources, such as sugarcane and corn starch. As it is derived from natural ingredients you would think that PLA straws are better for the environment. However, this is not always the case and can often be misleading. The sugarcane and cornstarch becomes another form of plastic during its manufacturing process that will take years to break down in landfills and the ocean. There is a huge gap within the community as consumers and businesses believe using a PLA straw is an eco-friendly alternative, but unless these are sorted and put into their own industrial composting bin (not even a plastic recycling bin) they become yet another form of plastic waste.  PLA products need to be composted under specific conditions at special industrial facilities meaning consumers and businesses must have access to this facility.  As this is not always possible, PLA products end up in landfills which will take as much time to breakdown as plastic having a negative impact on the environment.

Beve Straws has a responsibility to keep our environment clean and unpolluted. We are proud to supply a zero-waste, 100% compostable product that produces micro-organisms to enrich soil leaving no toxic residue.
